The River Callan is an historic river that rises in the upland border region around Keady.  It flows north through the old industrial area of Millford and Armagh City to join the main Blackwater River to Lough Neagh.  The Callan river was the main route used by the Vikings to sack the ancient city of Armagh and the power of the Callan River was used around Millford to power mills for spinning linen during the Victorian era.  

As one of the project’s catchments, the River Callan faces the familiar challenge of excess nutrient loading,  The sandy soils are easily eroded and carry the excess phosphate to Lough Neagh contributing to the blue green algae emergency there.

ABC Council leads the restoration here through working with landowners to reduce bank erosion and sediment loads reaching Lough Neagh.
