Lough Navar is a magnificent site that extends across 2,600ha of bog, heath and woodland.  The site includes the Magho cliffs with breathtaking views across Lower Lough Erne.  The site is the source for the River Sillees that meanders quite slowly from Lough Navar to Lough Erne near Enniskillen.

Rainfall on Lough Navar results in a large volume of water hitting the Sillees River a few hours later.   This water surge causes a lot of bank erosion and the transport of silt to Lough Erne.    

ABC Council has commissioned a specialist forest agency in the UK to investigate the impact of “slowing the flow” of water on Lough Navar to ease the pressure on the Sillees River downstream.  The pilot has potential to be replicated across Ireland and could be a useful tool to help us adapt to climate change.
