Ballymartrim is a small, contained catchment in County Armagh, and one of CALM’s flagship pilot projects. Its mix of intensive and part-time farms, apple orchards and homes on septic tanks makes it a revealing test bed: the threats to water quality here are varied and interconnected.

ABC Council is working to identify and stop every source of nutrients and harmful chemicals reaching the watercourse, testing a range of practical solutions alongside community engagement. Ulster University’s continuous monitoring system runs here too, measuring the impact as the work progresses. Because Ballymartrim feeds into Lough Neagh, it doubles as a valuable case study for tackling the blue-green algae problem in the lough
