CALM partners have begun a new programme of river restoration and community monitoring across the Upper Bann catchment, bringing local knowledge and practical action together to support healthier waterways.

A shared focus for healthier rivers

The new programme brings CALM partners, community groups and local residents together to understand the pressures affecting the Upper Bann catchment. The work will combine field observations, water quality monitoring and practical restoration activity over the coming months.

Local knowledge at the centre

People who live and work beside the river understand its changing seasons, habitats and challenges. Their experience will help the project identify priority areas and shape activities that respond to the needs of each local place.

What the first phase includes

  • Riverside habitat surveys at selected locations.
  • Water sampling to build a clearer picture of current conditions.
  • Conversations with landowners, schools and community organisations.
  • Practical actions to improve habitat and reduce pressure on the river.

Why this work matters

Healthy rivers support wildlife, provide valuable spaces for people and help communities prepare for a changing climate. Small improvements across a catchment can build into lasting benefits when they are planned together and supported by local action.

Working across the catchment

The programme will be delivered in stages, with findings shared through regular CALM updates. This approach will help partners learn from each site, adapt activities where needed and make sure future work is guided by evidence.

A message from the project team

“Restoring a river begins with paying attention to the places and people connected to it. By working together, we can turn local knowledge into practical improvements that last.”

What happens next

The first surveys and community conversations will take place this autumn. Further updates will share progress, early observations and opportunities for people to get involved.
