The Routing Burn rises in the drumlin landscape south of Omagh, in County Tyrone, and flows around 21 kilometres before feeding into the Strule and Foyle system. It’s a typical small to medium spate river, winding through farmland, wetland and rolling countryside.

Improved grasslands, drumlin hills, wet meadows and riparian zones support a variety of wildlife along the burn. It’s valued locally for wild brown trout angling in a scenic rural setting, and carries migratory salmon and sea trout during higher flows.

Agriculture, land drainage and diffuse runoff have taken their toll on water quality and habitat here too. The Routing Burn contributes to the River Foyle and Tributaries Special Area of Conservation, a Natura 2000 site recognised for Atlantic salmon, otter and its riverine and wetland habitats.
